Beware K9 Advantix
Hello All,
I am sending this to all my friends & family with dogs. I put K9 Advantix, under 10lbs size, on Ginger & Rowdy, my toy poodles, on Tuesday afternoon. By the time we got home on Tuesday night, Ginger was in a full adverse reaction. She's exhibiting the "bent tail" and is twitching uncontrollably. Took Ginger to vet, gave us Valium for "anxiety". We're also giving her children's Benadryl.
By Thursday, Rowdy is exhibiting symptoms.
We went back to vet on Saturday. They both have had cortisone injections, a "skin flush" (they flushed a bunch of water under their skin trying to get rid of the toxin).
They're now both on a muscle relaxant and Prednisone. We are still having problems, not getting much relief. I just wanted everyone to know of our issues and to warn all to be aware of these in case you use this treatment for your own dogs and have any similar symptoms.
The link below is a forum I found where others have experienced these as well.

Anyways, you might want to consider not using K9 Advantix.

Surprised about K9 Advantage
For what it's worth, we have been using Revolution on our Border Colliers for several years. The only reaction that I've seen out of one of them is that she hates the smell and rolls over on her back to get rid of it. After about a half hour, everything is back to normal.
Revolution is pretty expensive and has to be prescribed from a vet -- in our case from Hazel Ridge Vet. I'm not sure about Advantage. Does that also require a vet's prescription?
I assume that both Advantage and Revolution cover the same features.
The following web link pretty much describes the use of Revolution:
http://www.revolution4dogs.com/content.asp?country=US?=EN&drug=RV&species=CN&sec=180
I hope Ginger and Rowdy are recovering quickly and expect to seem them at the dog park soon.
Thanks for posting to the FORDOG Forum. As the forum grows, the messages will get out to more and more of our dog park users.
Footnote: I notice if you just cut and paste a web link into the message, you don't necessarily have to use the little URL icon above. You can click on PREVIEW before sending the message to see if the web link is going to work when you post your message.
See you soon.

What we've been using
I've been using Frontline Plus on my Shiba. No problems to date.
Kills fleas, flea eggs, ticks, and chewing lice. Fast acting. Waterproof.

Re: Beware K9 Advantix
Just to be clear, it is Advantix not Advantage. We are now well. Vet wants us to try not to use anything at this point. We will revisit if we get a flea or tick.

I know the difference
I'm aware of the difference. Advantix has the commercial on TV with the puppy at summer camp that says "I ain't got no flees!" <grin>

Just to be accurate they do not have same features, as revolution has a heartworm preventative. Neither Advantix or Advantage offer that. Advantage has better tick coverage than revolution though. So if your doggie gets around the common deer tick alot, your best option for complete coverage would be K9 Advantage for flea and tick coverage teamed up with Interceptor heartworm preventative. The double prescription adds about 8 dollars per month cost as compared to revolution.
Hope this helps,
Scott
